I am very excited to be working with videographer, Andrew Michael, as he magically is putting together a promo video of me and my work. This week I had the pleasure of photographing model and actress, Sharon Wright, while Andrew shot us both at work!  We started in a studio at the Windows Lofts, hosted by Mario Antoine, and continued on as we made a visit to the roof top overlooking my beautiful home city of Kansas City… yes, where all the crazy little women are.  See?  -I AM home. ;)  Thanks again Andrew, Sharon and Mario for making this all possible!

I had the honor of photographing Sherri and her two girls, Sterling and Brooke, from Texas, as they flew into Kansas City briefly a few weekends ago.  Sherri is a sister of mine, as her father became my father early on in my childhood. I so respect Sherri for who she is and what I see she has become. She carries herself with such grace. I enjoy watching Sherri mother her two girls so well. The girls love and respect her like not very many teenagers do. It’s a beautiful thing to have healthy relationships between a mother and daughter.

These photos were a Christmas gift for their dad, so I’m just now posting, as not to have spoiled his surprise!  And I hear… that he said “are you trying to make me cry?” when he opened his surprise.  I love that!

Enjoy a few of my favorites from our chilly Missouri day (as many of you know, Missouri is now experiencing a mega-blizzard with up to 13 inches of snow! ahh)…

One October evening while walking to my car in a mall parking lot, I checked my facebook messages on my iPhone and found a long message from someone that had read an article about me and Star Shooter.  I was thrilled to see someone’s excitement in what I was doing with children, as well as in my career.  I replied thanking Katelyn Ruth Hansel for her encouragement… and this was just the beginning!  Katie and I since have discovered other photographical common interests to discuss as well as networked with other photographers around the country, such as Holt Webb with his one-of-a-kind project Vanishing America and Danny Goldfield in his amazing project, NYChildren, that I am especially fond of and hope to collaborate with in the future. Katie and I have had a blast learning about each other and our dreams for photography and thought it’d be cool to someday meet each other.

Then, I was offered a photo shoot in Myrtle Beach this past weekend, and when I discovered  that Katie and I were going to only be 6hrs. away from each other, we both planned to jump in cars and drive 3hrs. each to Columbia, SC.  So, yesterday, my “virtual friend” became a real live friend in the flesh!  ;)  We both had fun shooting each other and had a super special treat of visiting the Columbia Museum of Art with the famous photographer, Ansel Adam’s “Masterworks Collection!” Much more images of our day of shooting will be posted in a facebook album, so feel free to check ‘em out! HERE (but not now! check out a few of my faves below first!)

I think the Powell’s knew me before I knew them, and I know they loved me before I loved them. I was probably just all of 6yrs. old when their family became friends with my family. I say they loved me first, because today they have so much love to give, I am certain they had just as much to give back in the 80s when I was just a wee little thang. My first memories of Mr. and Mrs. (Mario and Brenda) were during a “children’s crusade” at our church. Brenda was dressed up as some character along with my grandma Connie, as “grandma raisin muffin” and my grandpa as “trapper Pete”.  Mario did some silly act with someone else pretending to be his legs and arms (that person was behind a black sheet). I’m not quite sure how I learned the love of Jesus through all those silly acts, but I am certain that I know the love of Jesus today through the lives of the Powell’s. They obviously have allowed Jesus to take first place in their home and in their lives. Even though it was a very frigid day in Moberly, Missouri, the joy that radiated from the Powell’s warmed my heart.  It is my honor to present to you, the Powell’s.

After Fourteen Years…

December 5, 2009

Today my brother and I put up the Christmas tree in our parents home in Missouri!  Last time we decorated for Christmas together  was 14yrs. ago on the island of Penang in Malaysia.  Josh and I spent a handful of years as missionary kids in Malaysia, and after high school we both relocated back to America. Just recently, my parents have returned to our homeland of Missouri after almost two decades of living and working in SE Asia… and today we enjoyed the simplicity of being together on a special occasion, something so many people take for granted sometimes.  It’s invigorating to think… just what will our futures look like?  Together?  For real?  After almost two decades?  Now… this is different, but good. Very good.

Thanks, mom, for the brown-rice pancakes with agave nectar syrup while we decorated!  It’s a season of making new traditions!  So… I challenge you today, to value the ones that make life “your life” and what the heck… make a new tradition.  Life is short!

Enjoy the textured photograph I made of my brother… after he conked out on the couch from decorating so hard… ha!

An extreme inspiration to me this year as I’ve started my photography business, is photographer Sarah Rhoads in Seattle.  She simply discovers the value in people and exposes that through photography.  I believe Sarah is so good at this because she’s first discovered the value of who she is and maintains a humble heart along the way; and all the while, possibly without knowing, she deposits a little bit of her wonder-self in others around her, which perpetuates the motivation to value others. This is what her work has done for me -stirs in me to value myself and others around me for who we are and what we have to give to each other.  May my work always give to others more than they deserve and more than they expect… because they are worth it! ;)
Sarah has extended the invitation to all to submit their self-portrait to her before Dec. 20th and she’ll post them before the new year. (email her at consulting@sarahrhoads.com) Here is my 2009 self-portrait. Thanks so much, Sarah!  May God bless you and your business even more!

Meet the Passmore’s. They are adorable -inside and out!  The Passmore’s are my personal friends since something around 2003, I think. It was love at first sight! Literally, I walked into their Kansas City home not knowing them, and our hearts have never parted since. I then followed them to Malta (it’s a tiny island south of Italy) twice, where they live (but they are currently just visiting KC). I’ve also followed them to Cyprus on one occasion. Another time I flew to Greece from their Malta home, cuz it was just so darn close. Not only have the Passmore’s spiced up my life culturally, but also… with Love!  The Passmore’s are full of unconditional love that oozes on anyone willing to sponge it up… and I’m honored to be that sponge. Thanks for always being so genuinely caring, Ben, Eve, Victoria and Elijah.  I love you all forever.  …now stay tuned, as I will have Part Two coming soon…

Kansas City Engagement

November 2, 2009

Sweetest little Kansas City couple…  I had the honor to assist photographer and old college friend, Ashley Elwell | Three Three Photography.  Working with Ashley is like putting my fingers in warm butter.  We are smooth as silk together, and most of all… I had great fun!  Enjoy the photos taken at Loose Park in Kansas City.  I felt like I walked into a photographer’s club when I stepped foot into the park that day.  I saw at least 30 photographers shooting away! It was a gloriously golden Fall day and everyone with a camera was out!  Photo at the end is Ashley at work!  It was her first day “out” after giving birth to her precious little boy, Xander Cade, last month.

Meet the incredibly sweet and super fun family in Myrtle Beach, that I had the privilege of photographing…

From Kansas City’s Liberty Memorial National World War I Monument to the quaint Crossroads Art District… Celina, Zachary and I had fun exploring downtown Kansas City, Missouri.  And a big “thank you” to Renita for being my professional assistant on this shoot!
