I am just very interested in hearing what other photographers think about Urban Outfitters photography/advertisement. I think it’s very flat and raw, but consistent and catchy. I believe it’s not ‘good photography’ that this next generation wants, but they just want ‘a message’. A voice that speaks and represents who they are. Raw and a Modern flair that embraces history. Let me know you’re thoughts… HERE. Also, take note of these raw yet very authentic brands:

February 15, 2010Crack the Joy out with Giving
December 24, 2009Hasn’t Christmas snuck up on us? I know it has me. For weeks I’ve been saying “I’m just not into Christmas this year,” which is very strange for me because I love holiday time with family. Even more so, I should be “into” it this year, because my parents have just moved back to Kansas City for the first time in almost two decades (they were overseas missionaries). -and that should be exciting, right? Well, yes it is, but I can’t help but notice this lack of energy or desire to go spend loads of money just to spend, when we really don’t “need” anything. It’s almost like my “energy to give” is clogged. So, I’ve been prayerfully considering what is really important in this holiday season… and Jesus most definitely is the reason for the season. But what does this really mean? For me, I’m simply reflecting on the man Jesus and my relationship with Him… or lack thereof. Sometimes just when we think we know someone, we realize we really don’t. I believe there is so much to the man Jesus, that we can forever be discovering more about Him during our stay on earth.
These thoughts led to a freedom, that I pursued. A freedom to not have to be in the box of what Christmas should look like, but to allow ourselves to be “unclogged!” To unclog my “energy to give” today, I went and randomly gave to three different people. As I stood in line behind three different people at three different stores, and when I heard their total bill announced, I simply asked them “Excuse me, may I pay for your bill?” Completely dumbfounded each time, the person’s face was a blank as they just stared at me. I had taken a blow at cracking them. Cracking that hard external layer of fear, worry and solitude. After a few moments, and once my debit card was swiped, that hard external layer fell to the ground… and a smile was cracked! Out came a joy that was buried inside… or received from the outside.
The three people I played “angel” to today, were an older woman at Whole Foods, a teenage boy at Dollar General and an African American grandma at another Dollar General. The grandma stated she had many grandchildren. She had tons of toys, wrapping paper, gift bags and candy for her items. When I saw her little coin purse come out, she seemed to have budgeted for this expense today. Once she realized that all the items on her list were just paid for, she put her coin purse back in her bag, turned around and gave me a big hug and said “I’ll never forget this for the rest of my life.”
It doesn’t take much to crack the joy out. In these hard economical times, go do the unexpected. Go find someone to crack the joy out of!
Oddly enough, once I gave to these three people today, it literally “unclogged” my energy to give (or maybe cracked a little more joy outta ME!)… and I had a newly found energy to go find a few small items for my family members. Most of all, my love for others was activated and increased. Thanks, Jesus, for being my inspiration and sole source of this love.

From Virtual to Flesh: Katelyn Ruth {Kansas City Photographer}
December 21, 2009One October evening while walking to my car in a mall parking lot, I checked my facebook messages on my iPhone and found a long message from someone that had read an article about me and Star Shooter. I was thrilled to see someone’s excitement in what I was doing with children, as well as in my career. I replied thanking Katelyn Ruth Hansel for her encouragement… and this was just the beginning! Katie and I since have discovered other photographical common interests to discuss as well as networked with other photographers around the country, such as Holt Webb with his one-of-a-kind project Vanishing America and Danny Goldfield in his amazing project, NYChildren, that I am especially fond of and hope to collaborate with in the future. Katie and I have had a blast learning about each other and our dreams for photography and thought it’d be cool to someday meet each other.
Then, I was offered a photo shoot in Myrtle Beach this past weekend, and when I discovered that Katie and I were going to only be 6hrs. away from each other, we both planned to jump in cars and drive 3hrs. each to Columbia, SC. So, yesterday, my “virtual friend” became a real live friend in the flesh! ;) We both had fun shooting each other and had a super special treat of visiting the Columbia Museum of Art with the famous photographer, Ansel Adam’s “Masterworks Collection!” Much more images of our day of shooting will be posted in a facebook album, so feel free to check ‘em out! HERE (but not now! check out a few of my faves below first!)

After Fourteen Years…
December 5, 2009Today my brother and I put up the Christmas tree in our parents home in Missouri! Last time we decorated for Christmas together was 14yrs. ago on the island of Penang in Malaysia. Josh and I spent a handful of years as missionary kids in Malaysia, and after high school we both relocated back to America. Just recently, my parents have returned to our homeland of Missouri after almost two decades of living and working in SE Asia… and today we enjoyed the simplicity of being together on a special occasion, something so many people take for granted sometimes. It’s invigorating to think… just what will our futures look like? Together? For real? After almost two decades? Now… this is different, but good. Very good.
Thanks, mom, for the brown-rice pancakes with agave nectar syrup while we decorated! It’s a season of making new traditions! So… I challenge you today, to value the ones that make life “your life” and what the heck… make a new tradition. Life is short!
Enjoy the textured photograph I made of my brother… after he conked out on the couch from decorating so hard… ha!

Cards in Hand
August 16, 2009A long awaited moment… design set and cards printed. ahhhh, I can breathe deeper and exhale longer. Thank you Preston and Chris at Fresh Impression Letterpress for beautiful, impeccable, deliciously perfect letterpress work; and thank you Erica for designing such a fabulous logo and helping me brand my business so I can leave a “mark” in this world! ha. You all rock and I want the world to know about it! More great images of the final product HERE. (make sure you’re my facebook friend, to view)

macro or micro?
August 6, 2009I was just playing around with my 100mm 2.8 macro lens, while I was shooting the Voltron (click HERE to read more) -and snapped a quick shot of my beads lying on my dresser. Maybe I should keep them in a more proper storage case? hmm… naa. (the ISO on this shot was cranked to 3200 because it’s night time and my room is dimly lit. With a 2.8f and 1/60.)

sunset beach, NC
July 8, 2009My mom and I took a few-mile walk down Sunset Beach in Calabash, NC. She was eager to get to the “Kindred Spirit” mailbox to read all the “notes.” The KS mailbox, I’ve been told, has been planted on the beach for generations. It’s filled with notebooks, journals and letters -full of people’s hearts poured out onto paper. One, a man saying he was on vacation with “the wife and kids” but that his heart was at home with another woman! Another, a young girl told a “top secret” message, how she saw her step-dad naked one night at the fireplace! Others, simply stating their joy of being on vacation or being in awe of God’s glorious blessings that come packaged in an ocean with sand on their feet.
…On the way to the KS mailbox, I passed this beautiful bunch of people (two families) all in matching attire, posing with big smiles for a grand shot… but with a tiny point-n-shoot camera! I had my big ‘ol Canon 5DM2 with 70-200mm lens on, and just could not pass behind the photographer (a beach-stander) without offering a shot. So, enjoy a few snapshots of their beautiful bunch of children I captured!
And the moments were ended with a gorgeous blazing sunset (last image)… I got my mom to pose with little effort… as she had a load of tenacity to take in every part of this glorious evening - as you can even see from this first shot! I love my momma. ;)

July 5, 2009A friend of mine posted an adorable moment she captured with her DSLR and posted it on facebook. I just couldn’t help but steal the image and give it a “pop.” Check out what I did in about three minutes (unusual, as it usually takes me much longer!) And of course, I told my friend I stole it… so that exempts me from any copyright laws, right? ha. Don’t hurt me, Liz!

i can’t believe it… my third interview in two weeks!
July 3, 2009A wonderful writer friend I met in North Carolina has chosen to interview me! Again, you’ll learn even more about me and my nonprofit organization, Star Shooter. Have a look by clicking HERE. Thank You!
I am very pleased to have been interviewed by Amanda K. Photography! “Katie” is an amazing photographer and I am more than honored to be supported by her! This interview was so incredibly fun for me. You can probably learn a new thing or two about me as well as my vision for Star Shooter… check it out HERE. And thanks for reading!
